Just as President Barack Obama gave the green light Monday to ramp up fundraising for a Super PAC supporting his re-election bid, he also gave conditional approval to a constitutional amendment that would beef up Congress’s ability to control the flow of money into politics.
“And the President favors action — by constitutional amendment, if necessary—to place reasonable limits on all such spending. But this cycle, our campaign has to face the reality of the law as it currently stands,” Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a blog post announcing that campaign aides and administration officials will appear at fundraisers for the pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA.
Obama’s decision to get behind the amendment seems like a rather transparent effort to make his decision to cooperate with Priorities USA more palatable to those who support a crackdown on money in politics, and perhaps even those who lament the fact that Obama has been less than vigorous in pressing for campaign finance reform since he took office.
